The Zircon StudSensor HD55 is a stud finder designed for homeowners and DIY enthusiasts. It offers a range of features that make it a reliable tool for locating studs, metal, and live AC electrical wiring behind walls, floors, and ceilings.
Key Features:
- Dual Scan Modes: The HD55 has two scan modes – the Stud Scan Mode and the Deep Scan Mode. The Stud Scan Mode is ideal for standard wall thicknesses, while the Deep Scan Mode can detect studs up to 1 inch deep.
- Target Spotlight: This feature helps users mark the edges of studs accurately.
- Wire Warning Detection: The device alerts to the presence of live AC electrical wiring, enhancing safety during scanning.
- Ergonomic Design: The HD55 is designed for comfortable use, making it easy to handle during projects.
- Battery Life: It uses a single 9-volt battery, which lasts quite a long time since the device only turns on when the button is held down.

Tests:
While testing the stud finder I found a few false positives while moving it around, but they were few and far between. A quick refresh by removing the stud finder and putting it back was successful. This was able to capture the very edge of the stud and mark it with a clear arrow allowing me to see the full size and not just the center.
The tests works very well for the power lines as shown in the image below. This is something that I have been needing as my existing stud finder doesn’t do.
Conclusion:
The Zircon StudSensor HD55 is a reliable and affordable option for home DIY projects. It is easier to read than the craftsman and has wire detection, for my money, I’m not going back.
We haven’t had a chance to utilize the Zircon A200, the Franklin or Bosch. As we test out more devices in this area we will update.
